IRN Invoice Pakistan: How FBR Invoice Reference Number Works

Understanding IRN (Invoice Reference Number) and QR code for FBR e-invoices in Pakistan.

What is IRN in Pakistan?

IRN stands for Invoice Reference Number. In Pakistan’s FBR digital invoicing system, when you submit an invoice to FBR through PRAL, FBR validates the data and returns a unique IRN for that invoice. The IRN is a critical identifier that proves the invoice was registered with FBR and is compliant. Along with the IRN, FBR also returns a QR code that encodes verification details so anyone can confirm the invoice’s authenticity.

How does IRN and QR work with PRAL?

Your invoicing software sends the invoice payload to PRAL (Pakistan Revenue Automation Limited), which forwards it to FBR. FBR validates the invoice and, if accepted, generates the IRN and QR code. These are sent back to your system. You then typically print or attach the QR code on the invoice (or PDF) so that customers and authorities can scan and verify the invoice against FBR’s records. Without a valid IRN and QR, the invoice is not considered compliant under FBR’s e-invoicing rules.

Why IRN matters for Pakistani businesses

FBR uses IRN and QR to reduce fake invoices and improve tax compliance. For your business, having an IRN and QR on every invoice means you meet FBR requirements, avoid disallowance of input tax for your customers, and keep audit-ready records. Invoicing software that integrates with PRAL—such as fbrly—automatically requests and stores the IRN and generates PDFs with the QR code so you stay compliant without manual steps.

Getting started with IRN-based invoicing

You need FBR/PRAL API credentials and software that supports PRAL integration. fbrly supports both PRAL sandbox (for testing) and production. Create your invoice in fbrly; the system submits it to FBR and attaches the IRN and QR to the invoice and PDF. For more on FBR rules and deadlines, see our SRO 709 compliance guide.
